How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

First off, what IS a capsule wardrobe? Basically, it’s a mini wardrobe made up of versatile, quality pieces that you can mix & match for multiple occasions, events and seasons. The golden number of items is 37, but this can of course be adjusted to your lifestyle, closet size, etc.

There are many benefits to a more minimalistic wardrobe – save money, time and effort plus you always feel like you have something great to put on.

How to start:
  1. Clean out your closet!
What items have you not worn in more than 6 months? Typically this is a good starting point since every 6 months or so the weather changes, and if the item hasn’t been worn since then, you’re most likely NOT going to wear it. Filter out those items and set them in a pile.
  2. Pare your wardrobe down.
This includes dresses, skirts, jumpsuits, tops, pants… pick your staples. You can start by picking 3-4 items from each category that are your GO-TO items and go from there. Pieces like chunky knit sweaters, leggings, favorite pair of black pants, those jeans that fit JUST right, that dress that hugs you in all of the right places. Start to create your capsule pile and sort through the other items afterwards.
  3. Find what you’re missing.
As you’re going through your closet, note any items that you might be missing. Maybe a black leather jacket, blazer, pair of work trousers? That way you can plan out any additional purchases that will help complete your seasonal wardrobe.
Here are some capsule wardrobe items that I suggest:
  1. Trench or Peacoat – great for most seasons and can pair with a hoodie or a dress & heels and always looks stylish and timeless.
  2. Blazer – I recommend a couple of blazers because they are so versatile. Another item you can dress up or down and wear throughout any season.
LBD – the little black dress. We all need that ONE dress that we can pull out of our closet when we’re feeling bloated or just not our best & it instantly gives a confidence boost.
  3. Denim Jacket – I suggest a couple of denim jacket fits – one more cropped & fitted and one that is a little oversized. Another staple item that works for every season and can take a simple outfit to the next level.
  4. The Jeans – you know those jeans that snatch the waist, make the booty look good and you know no matter what are going to look good (and be comfortable). Have those jeans in a light and dark wash & I suggest even splurging a little since they’ll never go out of style.
  5. Slip dress – the slip dress has never gone out of style because it is a classic piece that makes every woman feel like a million bucks the minute she puts it on. Pair with sneakers or a pair of heels.
  6. Black trousers – whether you work in an office or at home, a pair of good straight leg black trousers are a staple to have in your wardrobe. Can pair with a silk tank in the summer or chunky knit sweater in the winter. Look professional and classy.
