Skincare Layering Guide

We all love a good 12-step skincare routine, but it can be confusing to know what products go before others & how it all works. Here is an easy skincare layering guide to help you get the most out of your day and night routine.

Layer based on consistency

A good rule of thumb is to start with more “watery” based products and move to thicker consistencies. If you apply a more rich, thicker formula first it could prevent the other products from soaking into the skin.

Here is an example of skincare products in order:

1. Cleanser 2. Essence water or toner 3. Serums 4. Moisturizer 5. Eye Cream 6. Oil (at night) 7. Sunscreen (during the day)

After applying your skincare, allow the products to set in for at least 1 minute before applying anything else such as makeup. If you can, wait 5 min and allow the products to fully sink into the skin until it feels tacky.

There are also certain ingredient combinations you may want to avoid:

1. Retinol and Vitamin C - Retinol at night and Vitamin C during the day. 2. Vitamin C and AHAs - AHAs at night and Vitamin C during the day. 3. Vitamin C and Benzoyl Peroxide - Benzoyl Peroxide can make Vitamin C degrade. 4. Benzoyl Peroxide and Retinol - These two can cancel each other out, so use separately.

Maximize the benefits of your skincare products by layering them correctly and always contact your dermatologist if you have any questions!
